Alcoy Greenway introduces inland Alicante along the route of a railway that never entered service. Its tunnels and viaducts add another dimension to the outing, with engineering helping to explain the landscape. From Batoi you can plan a long day or choose a shorter out-and-back walk. The key is to decide your section and return arrangements in advance, rather than treating the greenway as though it were a circular route.

01

A specific twelve-kilometre reference

The council's sports department describes a twelve-kilometre route between Batoi and El Estepar, passing the Francisco Laporta sports complex area. That is the reference used here, not an out-and-back distance. Other publications define different sections of the former railway alignment. If you want to cover the entire stretch in one direction, arrange how you will return. If you intend to walk back to your starting point, include that additional effort in your plan.

02

Industrial heritage among the hills

The alignment belonged to the Alcoy–Agost railway project. The council highlights structures including the El Salt, Les Set Llunes and Sant Antoni viaducts, alongside the tunnels. The outing's appeal does not depend on accumulating distance: seeing how the railway line negotiates the terrain can give a short visit plenty of interest. Consult the map to choose features that actually fall within your selected section, rather than expecting to see every structure from any entrance.

03

Tunnels, shared use and a suitable distance

Carry your own light if your chosen section includes tunnels, and check municipal notices before setting off. Installed lighting does not guarantee that it will be working at every moment. Whether walking or cycling, adapt your speed to visibility and other people using the greenway. With children, choose your turning point in advance and keep energy for the return; a former railway platform still requires supervision near structures and access points.

04

A starting point for discovering Alcoy

Allow separate time for central Alcoy and its cultural attractions. If Font Roja or Serra Mariola interests you, consult their own itineraries rather than assuming a continuation of the greenway reaches your intended destination. Carry water and food for the duration you have planned, and adjust your outing to heat or rain. A carefully chosen morning section can leave room for a relaxed afternoon in town without creating an overambitious day.

Before your visit.

Do the twelve kilometres bring me back to Batoi?

No. The municipal reference used here connects Batoi with El Estepar. Arrange your return or select a shorter out-and-back section.

Can I rely on lighting in every tunnel?

Do not depend on it. Check current notices and bring your own light for your selected section, even when walking or cycling during daylight.
