Alto Vinalopó: castles, vineyards and inland towns

Alto Vinalopó exchanges the seafront for castle silhouettes, agricultural plains and towns among mountains. Villena and Biar are useful starting points, with Sax and the valley settlements extending the journey. Its appeal lies in giving inland Alicante time of its own, combining heritage and landscape without treating every stop as a beach-day excursion. Choose a base around the cultural visits or cycling outings you actually want to make, and leave room to discover the streets between the landmarks.

Villena or Biar: two ways to settle in

In Villena, the old town and Atalaya Castle can anchor a short break. Biar offers another rhythm, with streets climbing towards its fortress and Sierra Fontanella providing the wider setting. Compare the accommodation's actual address: a rural house advertised under a town's name may lie outside the settlement. Ask specific questions about walking to dinner, parking and bicycle storage. If arriving by train, identify the station on your ticket and arrange the final leg; do not assume every service brings you close to your hotel. The easiest base depends on your daily plans.

Castles with different stories and visits

The fortresses of Villena, Biar and Sax create a shared theme without offering identical experiences. Notice their relationship with the settlement, their defensive position and the change from streets to elevated enclosure. Biar's pointed-arch aqueduct adds another perspective: heritage also explains how water was managed. Two properly planned visits can be more rewarding than a hurried collection of exterior photographs. A themed castle itinerary does not imply a combined ticket or guarantee that every interior opens on the same day. Check each municipality's visiting arrangements and allow time for the climb and the town itself.

The museum needs a separate check

MUVI belongs to Villena's cultural history, and its connection with the Treasure is a familiar reason for taking an interest in the town. However, when reviewed in September 2026, the official tourism page states that the museum is temporarily closed. Do not organise a trip on the assumption that you can enter or see a particular collection: confirm reopening and current displays directly with Villena Tourism. The castle is a separate attraction with its own arrangements. Keep an alternative plan around the historic centre so that a change affecting one building does not determine your entire day.

Road cycling, mountain biking and farmland

Plains and mountains provide active days with scenery quite different from the coast. For road cycling, plan links between towns and examine surfaces, traffic and climbing along the entire itinerary. For mountain biking, establish which tracks permit riding and whether the route includes technical sections. A visible farm track is not automatically a recommended public route. Sierra de la Solana around Beneixama offers officially described walking possibilities that deserve separate preparation. Check the inland forecast rather than relying on coastal temperatures, and decide where to refill water without depending on an assumed café or shop.

Wine, a long lunch and time between towns

Wine tourism in Villena can add a conversation about the landscape to a heritage trip. Ask the winery about the visit, language and booking arrangements; a wine shop and a tour of production facilities are different experiences. Schedule tasting after the day's cycling and arrange the return journey if drinking alcohol. Leave room for an unstructured walk in Biar or lunch in the town you choose. Inland Alicante becomes easier to understand when the itinerary has pauses, rather than accumulating kilometres between castles, restaurants and accommodation spread too far apart. Reserve the experiences that actually require an appointment.
