Tabarca's underwater appeal is linked to the protection of its seabed and seagrass meadows. A snorkelling outing should begin by understanding where the activity is permitted, checking the sea and recognising the responsibilities that come with visiting a marine reserve.
Keep to the permitted coastal area
Order APA/102/2019, covering the reserve's outer waters, permits snorkelling and swimming without authorisation only along the shoreline: up to 200 metres from beaches and 50 elsewhere, or to the boundary of marked bathing areas. These maxima are not recommended swimming distances. Respect protected zones and follow instructions from the reserve's wardens.
Observe the seabed without disturbing it
The municipal guide distinguishes snorkelling from scuba diving, which requires authorisation, and advises against touching, feeding or removing animals. Keep clear of the seabed and avoid standing on seagrass. Leave organisms and natural souvenirs where they are. The aim is to observe the surroundings; this guide provides neither sensitive-species locations nor excursions into the integral reserve.
Make a flexible plan
Check the forecast, marker buoys and water conditions before entering. Municipal guidance advises avoiding waves, currents or murky water, carrying a marker buoy and considering a buoyancy aid. Do not go alone or approach boats. Confirm your return arrangements with your transport operator and keep the option of enjoying the island without getting into the sea.
