Take home an object and understand its origins

Craft offers an approachable way to discover Alicante through objects people use: a basket, a woven bag, a water jug or something for the home. Gata de Gorgos is a place to explore work with plant fibres; in Agost, the Pottery Museum helps explain the relationship between clay, skilled work and everyday life. These are two different starting points that encourage you to look at materials and processes before choosing a souvenir.

In a shop or workshop, ask who made the piece, where it was produced and which stages were done by hand. An object sold in a town known for crafts was not necessarily made there. Ask about the fibre, finish, care and intended use. A decorative plant pot, for example, may need a different drainage arrangement from the one you expect; check with the seller.

Arrange ahead if you want to watch an artisan at work or join a workshop: an open shop does not imply a continuous demonstration. For fragile or bulky pieces, check packaging, shipping and costs before buying. Taking time for these questions turns a purchase into a conversation about the place and helps you choose something you will actually use.

Where can I start exploring basketry and pottery in Alicante?

You can plan two separate visits: Gata de Gorgos for shops and work with plant fibres, and Agost for pottery and its museum. Use the guides to both towns and confirm workshops and demonstrations directly. This is not an itinerary assuming every artisan will be open at the same time.

How can I establish whether a piece is handmade and local?

Ask about the maker, workshop, materials and process, and keep the receipt or maker identification. Match the explanation to the actual object; words such as traditional or Mediterranean do not establish its origin. For tableware or containers, also ask whether the piece suits the intended food use.
