Give the places you visit a little more context

A cultural visit can change the way you read a landscape: understanding an everyday object, noticing how a town developed or discovering an artist's perspective. You can build a day around a single visit and leave time for the surrounding neighbourhood, rather than treating it as a list of admissions to collect.

Before leaving, distinguish the permanent collection from a temporary exhibition, general admission from a bookable activity, and the main building from a separate venue. Consult the official programme for your dates: an old news article may describe an exhibition that has already ended. In churches and other places of worship, establish when tourist visits are permitted and respect services and access instructions.

Festivals, food and traditional skills are also part of local culture. Combine listings with the town and regional guides to put each tradition in context.
